AIMS INFO

Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) is a standards-based test that provides educators and the public with information regarding the progress of Arizona's students in meeting the state's curriculum standards in reading, writing and mathematics.  Arizona high school students must pass all three content sections of the AIMS in order to graduate.

The Arizona Department of Education’s website offers more information about AIMS, including study guides and sample questions, at the following Internet website:  http://www.ade.state.az.us/AIMS/students.asp

AIMS Requirements

All students who entered high school on or after the start of the 2002-03 school year must score well enough on the state-mandated AIMS tests (reading, writing and mathematics) to meet the standards at the proficiency level. All students must “meet the standard” on all High School AIMS (reading, writing and mathematics) in order to receive a high school diploma.

AIMS Augmentation

AIMS Augmentation is a process established for students who have not yet passed all of the sections of the AIMS, but who have completed all coursework, have participated in remedial tutoring opportunities, and have taken the AIMS test each time it was offered since August 2005.  Points from eligible courses may be applied to a student’s highest AIMS Reading, Writing and Mathematics scores in order to improve their score. If a student’s score is above the passing score on the AIMS test, the student has met the graduation requirements for that content area. For additional information on AIMS requirements, the approved State Board rule can be reviewed at the following Internet website: http://ade.az.gov/standards/aims/gradrequire.

AIMS Reciprocity

Arizona law allows for passing scores from other states’ high school standards-based exams that are equivalent to the Arizona AIMS High School test to be used in place of the AIMS.  Students/parents must provide official documentation to the school of the student’s score(s) which are eligible for Arizona reciprocity. The guidelines and the list of approved state test and specific exam can be viewed at the following Internet website: http://ade.az.gov/standards/aims/gradrequire.
